“„Maurizio Fondriest urodził się w Cles (Trydent) w samym sercu Val di Non 15 stycznia 1965 roku. W ciągu dwunastu sezonów jako zawodowiec zdobył aż 69 zwycięstw w wyścigach szosowych. Wygrał Mistrzostwo Świata w wieku zaledwie 23 lat, dwukrotnie zdobył Puchar Świata w kolarstwie w latach 1991 i 1993, triumfował w legendarnym wyścigu Mediolan-San Remo w 1993 roku i odniósł niezliczone sukcesy zarówno w klasykach, jak i w etapach Giro d’Italia oraz Tour de France.
Pozostaje, tak jak wtedy, przede wszystkim wielkim pasjonatem kolarstwa. Uważny i skrupulatny w technicznych aspektach dotyczących roweru, jego dbałość o pozycję na siodełku, poszukując „idealnej” geometrii, stała się wręcz legendarna.
Po zakończeniu kariery zawodowej, kładzie nacisk na wartość rodziny, jednak życie wielkiego mistrza musi znaleźć swoją ciągłość również w przyszłości. Dlatego też Maurizio obecnie wspiera wielu młodych kolarzy, dzieląc się z nimi swoim ogromnym zasobem rad i doświadczeń poprzez swoje niezwykłe przykłady.
Od momentu, kiedy zaczął umieszczać swoje nazwisko na pierwszych ramach, zrozumiał, że każdy najmniejszy szczegół roweru musi odzwierciedlać jego osobowość i profesjonalizm. W tych latach zarejestrował wiele patentów, ponieważ zawsze wierzył w badania i rozwój, a każda z jego zrealizowanych koncepcji stanowiła nową wyzwanie.””
Po wielu zwycięstwach wśród amatorów i po dominacji w Giro delle Regioni w 1986 roku, Maurizio Fondriest rozpoczyna zawodową karierę w barwach Ecoflam, pod okiem Giuseppe Martinelli.
Rok 1988 to szczyt kariery Maurizio Fondriesta, kiedy zdobywa Mistrzostwo Świata w Renaix, w Belgii. W wieku zaledwie 23 lat, wygrywa również etap Tirreno-Adriatico i zajmuje drugie miejsce w wyścigu Mediolan-San Remo.
To rok rekordów z 25 zwycięstwami: Mediolan-San Remo, Strzała Walońska, GP Zurych, etap Giro, klasyfikacja generalna Giro del Trentino, Tirreno-Adriatico, Grand Prix du Midi Libre i Escalada a Montjuich.
W 1994 roku, w barwach Team Lampre, Maurizio Fondriest ponownie wyróżnia się, wygrywając Tour of Britain, 2 etapy i klasyfikację generalną Giro di Polonia, Coppa Sabatini i Giro del Lazio.
Po 11 latach kariery zawodowej, 9 występach na Mistrzostwach Świata, 4 Giro d’Italia, 4 Tour de France, 2 Vuelta a España, 36 startach w „klasykach monumentów” i 69 zwycięstwach, Maurizio Fondriest kończy karierę po ostatnim sezonie z Team Cofidis.
Po zakończeniu kariery zawodowej, Maurizio Fondriest przenosi całą swoją uwagę i doświadczenie na budowę rowerów, zakładając firmę Fondriest Bikes. W 2006 roku firma została przejęta przez grupę Cicli Esperia.
